Campus update for July 31, 2020

July 31, 2020

Dear students,

Dean of Students Dr. Wes Brooks gives an update on the new health clinic opening Aug. 31, our partnership with Genesis Health and telehealth services.

You will be able to schedule an appointment online, reducing the need to sit in a waiting room.

Make a virtual appointment!

On our friendly campus, we're used to popping into offices for services or just to ask a question.

However, now most offices, such as CORE, Registrar, Financial Aid and the Business Office, will ask you to make a virtual appointment instead. Parents also are welcome and encouraged to make a virtual appointment. Here is how to do it.

Boy or girl? A lot depends on the answer

Dr. Michelle Wolff and junior Aviana Zahara have published "The ethics of gender selection" in the journal of the Social Science Research Council.

If that sounds a bit dry to you, then here is an excerpt: "Before she (Aviana) was conceived, her parents hoped to have a girl rather than a boy...Her mother was born with one of the 1,100 known chromosome X-linked genetic disorders that, if passed on to a son, would cause serious health problems."

Zahara is majoring in biology and public health with plans to become a physician assistant. Dr. Wolff is an assistant professor of religion.

Their paper is here: http://tif.ssrc.org/2020/07/31/the-ethics-of-gender-selection/
