Purpose
To ensure students adhere to their weekly work-hour limits while maintaining a balance between employment and academic commitments.
Scope
This policy applies to all student employees working on or off-campus in positions funded by the college student employment budget.
Policy Statement
Student employees are subject to the following weekly work-hour limits:
- Domestic Students (Suggested):
- During the academic year, domestic student employees are encouraged to work no more than 10 hours per week across all positions.
- During official breaks and summer sessions, students may work up to 40 hours per week, if permitted by their department.
- International Students (Federal Policy):
- Per USCIS regulations, international student employees may not exceed 19 hours per week during the academic year.
- During official breaks and summer sessions, they may work up to 40 hours per week, if permitted by their department.
- All Students (Breaks & Summer):
- May work up to 40 hours per week, with department approval
Responsibility for Monitoring Hours
- Students are expected to track their hours worked across all positions.
- Student Payroll in the Business Office will monitor reports of high-hour students and follow up as needed.
Consequences for Exceeding Weekly Work-Hour Limits
Because international student hours are governed by federal law, the following compliance process applies:
- First Violation: Written warning from Student Employment in CORE.
- Second Violation: Meeting with Student Employment in CORE and supervisor; warning shared with department leadership.
- Third Violation: Loss of eligibility for campus employment for the remainder of the semester.
Roles & Responsibilities
- Students: Monitor their weekly hours and comply with the policy
- Supervisors: Respond to alerts, coordinate with other departments, and attend violation meetings when required
- Student Employment in CORE: Track hour limits, issue notifications, and enforce consequences
- Department Leads: Participate in disciplinary conversations and support enforcement as needed
Review and Revision
This policy will be reviewed annually by Student Employment in CORE and revised as needed to ensure compliance with federal laws, visa requirements, and institutional goals.
